Of the earth
Issen Kodo is a home fragrance brand founded by a ceramicist in Japan. Each piece begins with a vessel from a Japanese kiln, carrying a gentle scent and stillness.
Founder
The brand was founded by a Japan-based ceramicist with a decade of practice, whose work has taken her from contemporary studios to kilns of long regional tradition.
Her interest lies in material history: how pottery, once indispensable, has been quietly evolving, moving from necessity to expression.
Issen Kodo is her proposal to use ceramics to improve and elevate everyday living, as vessels for scent.
Tradition
Pottery has been made in Japan for thousands of years. Each region developed its own clay, glazes and character, shaped by influences from China, Korea and beyond.
Today, Japanese pottery remains a living craft, where new uses and expressions continue to emerge.
Vessels for scent
At Issen Kodo, our vessels are carefully selected from Japanese kilns. The Tea Room Candle is poured into a yunomi, the cup traditionally used for everyday tea. It is finished with a yōhen glaze, where flame and ash move across the glaze and shift its colour.
Like clay, our fragrances are drawn from natural materials: leaf and stem, wood and smoke, fruit dried slowly in the sun. They are quiet, familiar and unhurried, settling a room rather than overpowering it.
